About the author

Fran O’Sullivan is the Editorial Director – Business for NZME. She is a former editor of the National Business Review and a prominent columnist for the New Zealand Herald, where she writes on business, politics, and international affairs, and manages the annual high-profile Mood of the Boardroom project.

Fran co-chairs the China Business Summit – the premier annual China business conference in New Zealand – and sits as a member of the New Zealand China Council’s Advisory Board.

She is deputy chairman of the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (NZ) which brings together government officials acting in their private capacity; academia and business representatives to engage with counter-parts within APEC’s membership on issues of regional economic importance.

Fran was a founder-director of the New Zealand United States Council in 2001 having led the private sector taskforce, which originated the council. She subsequently served as vice-president of the council and is a member of the advisory board. She is also a regular participant in NZ’s partnership forums with the United States, Australia and Japan.

Tim McCready
Director - Innovation & Business Development

Tim is Director – Innovation & Business Development at NZ INC., where he works with businesses and business leaders to grow New Zealand’s business reach through Asia and North America. Tim also works with innovative companies in business development and capital raising, and has an interest in entrepreneurship, science, trade and investment.

Previously, Tim worked for the New Zealand government’s business development agency, New Zealand Trade & Enterprise (NZTE) and continues to be actively involved in the private start-up community.

Tim is co-chair of the Asia NZ Foundation’s Leadership advisory group. He has a Bachelor of Science and a Master in Bioscience Enterprise (Hons) from the University of Auckland.

Gabriel James
Director - Digital & Business Operations

Gabriel is Director – Digital & Business Operations at NZ INC. He has worked in the technology sector in New Zealand, Australia, and Europe, including large consulting projects on data centre infrastructures and trading systems in investment banking.

Gabriel has an interest in medicine, science, technology and business. He is involved in a range of scientific collaborations and industrial partnerships for developing biotechnology in Australasia. Gabriel holds a Bachelor of Science (Hons) from the University of Auckland and a PhD in Plant Science from Australia National University.

Greg is a Business Intern & Correspondent at NZ INC.

Brierley Penn
Business Intern

Brierley was a business intern at NZ INC. and in 2015 began her post-university career at Boston Consulting Group in Sydney after graduating with conjoint degrees in commerce and law.

Brierley was a participant in the US NZ Partnership Forum in Washington in May 2013. Brierley has a keen interest in international business and trade and worked as a columnist intern alongside her university studies and contributed to the NZ Herald Business Reports series. She also completed internships at UBS and Russell McVeagh law firm while working with us.
